Food for the Hungry

Emmanuel Community is partnering with Food for the Hungry! Here's your chance to reach out to the world and show God's glory to a child in need.

WHO is Food for the Hungry (FH)?

Dr. Larry Ward founded FH in 1971 on the simple premise that “they die one at a time, so we can help them one at a time”. This vision laid the foundation for responding to physical and spiritual needs worldwide.

WHAT do they do?

For the first ten years of ministry, FH was focused solely on relief work. After that period of time, they transitioned into long-term community development. Today FH continues to pursue development by walking alongside of churches, leaders and families in each community in order to overcome all forms of poverty. FH believes their role in the ministry of reconciliation involves teaching community members how they can live in healthy relationship with God, others, themselves and creation. Today, nearly 70% of FH operations are development-related and 30% are relief-related.

WHERE are we partnering with them?

FH is working in some of the most impoverished countries around the world. They have asked us to serve with them in the country of Nicaragua, Central America. For the next five years, we will be partnering with the community of Terrencio Munguia, which is located about 3 hours north of Managua (the capital city) and just a few minutes southwest of Chinandega.

WHY did we choose to partner with FH?

The foundation for FH’s ministry is relational. As a part of FH’s C2C program (Community 2 Community), the community of ECC will have the opportunity to share life with those living in the community of Terrencio. The vision is to empower and educate the community according to their needs and then in return to be challenged and educated by them. It is our desire to walk alongside of them as they become self-sustained and reach their God-given potential. We believe that through this partnership, transformation will occur both in the community of Terrencio and ECC.

HOW can I get involved?

It all starts with Child sponsorship. Through child sponsorship we will make personal connections with the families of Terrencio through writing letters and praying for them. Various other opportunities to creatively communicate with these families will also be provided in the future. The child sponsorship program makes it possible for FH’s ministry to advance forward in the community. Our monthly support pays for FH programs and the staff members who spend at least 3-4 days a week in Terrencio. These staff members lead Bible studies, kids club, leadership trainings, health clinics, do home visits of the sponsored children and so much more!

In addition to sponsoring a child, we will also be sending two teams a year to Terrencio; a great opportunity for ECC members to meet their child, his family and visit his home. The first trip will be April 2-9 2011. The cost is approximately $1,500person. Another trip will be scheduled for the fall of 2011.

Other ideas are being created to offer tangible ways for the people of ECC to engage with the people of Terrencio. More information will be posted as those opportunities are developed.
