Over the past two weeks I have had the opportunity to ride the red HOP-ON HOP-OFF buses in various cities.  I like these because you can ride around a city that is new to you and listen to the descriptions of each stop.  Several times, I rode all the way around the city to get the “overview” and then I began choosing the places where I wanted to spend more focused time.

This weekend, I want to take you on a proverbial HOP-ON HOP-OFF bus that leads us to the greatest sermon ever preached.  We will focus specifically on a passage known as the Beatitudes.  This week we look at the overview and then we will stop at each Beatitude for the next ten weeks and learn about them in detail.  They are much more fascinating than many people realize and we will not only learn ABOUT them, but we will focus on how to apply them.

We begin a summer series called “The Secret of Happiness” as we study The Beatitudes in great detail.  This weekend, we will do an overview of the Beatitudes which will help us find context for this amazing section of Scripture.

Matt. 5:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Matt. 5:11“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
